What is secondary hair?
short, fluffy, also known as underfur
What is primary hair?
longer, stiffer outer hair, also called guard hair
What is awn hair?
thinner than primary hair
What is tactile hair?
(whiskers), specially developed hair that helps cats sense their surroundings
What are e-collars used for?
keep dog or cat from biting or licking their incisions, keep from biting owner or handler, keep from going under fences
What are the 4 types of e-collars?
cone, inner tube, cervical, folding
How can an e-collar be applied?
with collar or gauze through loops of e-collar
What can homemade e-collars be made out of?
plastic buckets, ice cream lids, large bottles, wood, cardboard, x-ray film, heavy plastic
What animals do x-ray film e-collars work best for?
small animals (kittens, ferrets, hamsters, birds)
What should you do when making an e-collar out of x-ray film?
pad inside edge with cotton and tape and punch holes for gauze anchors to tie collar or harness
What should you do when making an e-collar out of ice cream lid?
cut enough of the bottom out of the bucket to accommodate head, pad the cut edge with cotton and tape, punch holes for gauze anchor to tie to collar
What animals are ice cream lids perfect for?
cats
What are some challenges for all collars?
keeping them on, making them comfortable, neatness, allowing animal to eat and rest
What are some important things to keep in mind with e-collars?
allow 2 fingers space at neck to avoid choking, be sure you can’t slip it over head by pulling, extend to nose or 1-2” past nose
