Dysrhythmias Flashcards
What can cause a long QT?
Hypokalaemia Hypomagnesaemia Drug: Class IA and III antiarrhythmics Antiobiotics (macrolides and quinolones) Antidepressants (tricyclics and SSRIs) Antipsychotics (haloperidol) Antiemetics
What are the ECG changes of first degree heart block?
Prolonged PR interval
What are the ECG changes of 2nd degree heart block?
Variable P wave conduction.
Different types
What are the ECG changes of 3rd degree heart block?
Complete AV dissociation.
What can cause 2nd degree heart block?
Normal variant Athletes Sicks sinus syndrome IHD Acute carditis Drugs
What is the indication for atropine?
Symptomatic bradycardia.
What are the contraindications to giving atropine?
Do not give to patients who have had a cardiac transplant.
What dose of atropine would you give to somebody who is bradycardic?
500mcg IV, repeated every 3-5 minutes, to maximum of 3 mg.
What are the actions of atropine on the body?
Blocks vagus nerve.
Increases sinus rate.
Increases atrioventricular conduction.
What are the side effects of atropine?
Blurred vision
Dry mouth
Urinary retention
Confusion
What are the indications for amiodarone?
Broad complex and narrow complex tachycardia.
What effect dose amiodarone have on the body?
Lengthens duration of action potential.
Prolongs QT interval.
May cause hypotension .
What are the indications for adenosine?
Narrow complex tachycardia.
Broad complex tachycardia if previously confirmed SVT with bundle branch block.
Diagnosis in regular broad complex tachycardia of uncertain nature.
What are the contraindications of adenosine?
Asthma.
What effect does adenosine have on the body?
Blocks conduction through AV node.
