Q
What are the two different types of dysphagia?
A
Mechanical
Motility disorder
2
Q
What investigations are good for dysphagia?
A
Upper GI endoscopy
Oesophageal manometry - look for dysmotility
Swallow test with contrast - pharyngeal pouch
Video fluoroscopy - identifying neurogenic causes.
3
Q
How does a diffuse oesophageal spasm present?
A
Intermittent dysphagia
Chest pain
4
Q
How would you investigate a diffuse oesophageal spasm?
A
Oesophageal manometry/contrast swallow test would show diffuse oesophageal spasms.
5
Q
What is Achalasia?
A
- Coordinated peristalsis is lost
* Lower oesophageal sphincter fails to relax due to degeneration of the myenteric plexus
6
Q
Name some causes of oesophageal strictures?
A
- GORD
- Corrosives
- Radiotherapy
7
Q
Management of Achalasia?
A
- Balloon stent
- Botulinium toxin can be injected into the lower oesophageal sphincter
- Calcium channel blockers can assist in relaxing the lower oesophageal sphincter
