Dynamics And Equilibrium Flashcards
What’s the equation for Newton’s 2nd Law?
F=ma
Define the newton
1 newton is the force required to accelerate a mass of 1kg by 1m/s^2 in the direction of the force
What equation relates mass and weight?
W=mg
Define centre of mass
A point through which any externally applied forces produces a straight line motion but no rotation
Define centre of gravity
An imaginary point at which the entire weight of an object appears to act
What is a free body diagram?
A diagram showing the forces acting on a body without the body, it’s used to model and simplify forces acting on an object
What is the resistive force that objects experience when moving through a fluid?
Drag
What’s the effect of drag
Slows objects down
Why does drag occur?
Due to the particles in the colliding with the object
Factors affecting drag…
- surface area
- velocity
- density of fluid
When is terminal velocity reached?
When the drag equals the weight (if object is falling) and so the resultant force is 0 and this means the acceleration is 0
Moment=
Force x perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force or point of rotation
What is the equation for moments of the force is acting at an angle?
M=Fxcos(angle)
What is the principle of moments?
For a body in rotational equilibrium the sum of the anticlockwise moments is equal to the sun of the clockwise moments
Define a torque of a couple
When two forces that a parallel but act in opposite directions create the same movement
