dynamics Flashcards
what is newton’s second law of motion?
it states that the rate of change of linear momentum is directly proportional to the resultant force acting on it and is in the direction of resultant force
what is newton’s first law of motion?
a body stays at rest or continues to move with a constant speed in a straight line unless acted upon by a net external force
what is newton’s third law of motion?
if body a exerts a force on body b, then body b will exert an equal and opposite force on body a
what is the principal of conservation of linear momentum?
the total linear momentum of a system remains unchanged if no net external force acts on the system - initial mv = final mv
what is an inelastic collision?
some or all kinetic energy is converted into other forms of energy
what is an elastic collision?
100% of kinetic energy is conserved - for elastic collisions, relative speed of approach = relative speed of separation // u1-u2 = v2-v1
what is impulse?
the product of average force and the time interval over which it is applied (area under the F-t graph)
what is the impulse momentum theorem?
it states that the total change in momentum of a particle during a time interval equals the impulse of the net force that acts on the particle during that interval
