Dynamic theory Flashcards
Dynamic theory considerations
- shape of ocean basins, land masses
- coriolis deflection due to the rotation of the earth
- variations in seabed depth
Coriolis effect
deflections of moving objects when they are viewed in a rotating reference frame
causes flow to curve rather than go straight from high pressure to low pressure region
Rossby number
ratio of inertial coriolis forces
- small number: signifies a system which is strongly affected by coriolis forced
- large number: system in which inertial forces are dominate
Rossby number
ratio of inertial coriolis forces
- small number: signifies a system which is strongly affected by coriolis forced
- large number: system in which inertial forces are dominate
Kelvin waves
tide which propagates with its largest amplitude near coastlines
Co-tidal chart - description
circle (boundaries) : called corange lines
duration lines (hours) : called cotidal lines
Corange Lines
link places having the same tidal range
link all the points having the same phase
the numbers are hours of lag
amphidromic points
points where the tidal range is zero
Classification of tides - semi-diurnal
F = 0 - 0.25
Classification of tides - mixed. predom. semi-diurnal
F = 0.25 - 1.5
Classification of tides - mixed. predom. diurnal
F = 1.5 - 3.0
Classification of tides - diurnal
F>3
