Dynamic Systems Theory (W2) Flashcards
Dynamic Systems Theory Concept
Based on the concept that the structures and configurations of an organism needs
to be considered whole, rather than examined piece by piece
Dynamic Systems
The term dynamic systems describes how a system of elements change over time in response to the constraints imposed on it
3 Examples of Complex Adaptive Systems
Nature, organisms and sporting teams
How is the human body a complex adaptive system?
The human body is composed of a multitude of systems (Musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory) that work together to complete a common
task goal
What is a complex system?
Complex systems are able to exploit information learnt about their surrounding constraints to continually reorganize their actions and achieve
task goals
Why shouldn’t you study a person (body and mind) separately?
Studying them individually often disrupts their
usual interactions so much that an isolated unit may
behave differently from the way it behaves as part of
a system
What are constraints?
They are all the factors that influence learning and performance at any moment in time
List 3 types of constraints
task, environment and individual
Individual Constraints (4)
1) Fitness (Strength, speed, aerobic capacity, flexibility)
2) Body composition (Muscle mass, body fat, height, limb length)
3) Mental Skills (Motivation, emotions, concentration,
confidence)
4) Perception (Decision making, anticipation, pattern
recognition)
Environmental Constraints (7)
1) Light
2) Wind/Temperature
3) Playing surface
4) Family and Peer support
5) Societal expectation
6) Values
7) Cultural norms
Task Constraints (5)
- Task goals (What we are trying to achieve)
- Rules (A set of parameters we must follow)
- Equipment (The size, weight, materials)
- Playing area (How much room we have to move)
- Number of players (Opponents and team members)
Perception
The functional act of picking up information of constraints to regulate movement
Action
The resulting movement in response to the perceived information
Affordances
opportunities or possibilities for action offered by the environment
