Q

what is the clinical significance of the rest position?

A

it is reproducible (the same throughout life) so good landmark e.g. full dentures

17
Q

what is a class II div I incisor relationship?

A

lower incisal edge posterior to upper cingulum plateau

and overjet

18
Q

what incisor relationship is this?

A

class II div I

19
Q

what is a class II div II incisor relationship?

A

lower incisal edge posterior to upper cingulum plateau

and overbite

20
Q

what incisor relationship is this?

A

class II div II

21
Q

what is a class III incisor relationship?

A

lower incisal edge anterior to upper cingulum plateau (underbite)

22
Q

what incisor relationship is this?

A

class III

23
Q

what is an overbite?

A

overlap in vertical plane

24
Q

what is an open bite?

A

no overbite or tooth contact

25
Q

what is an overjet?

A

overlap in horizontal plane

26
Q

what is the retruded contact position (RCP or ligamentous position)?

A

Condyles retruded into glenoid fossa

Do it by getting the patient to curl their tongue back

27
Q

what is the clinical significance of the retruded contact position RCP?

A

Symmetrical retrusion so gives a reproducible relationship between the maxilla and mandible

Good if patient cant close jaw reproducibly e.g. missing teeth, wondering jaw

28
Q

what is the Occlusal vertical dimension (OVD)

A

The face height between 2 reference points when the teeth are in ICP (chin and nose)

Measured using Willis gauge

29
Q

what is the rest/postural vertical dimension (RVD)?

A

The face height between 2 reference points when the teeth are in RP

30
Q

what is the freeway space?

A

The space between the teeth in rest position

FWS = RVD - OVD

31
Q

anatomical guide planes limit the movement of the jaws

name three

A

Incisal guidance
Cuspal inclines
TMJ

32
Q

understand the border movements of the mandible in the sagittal plane

A
33
Q

understand this

A
34
Q

what is the balanced occlusion concept?

A

contact on both sides when making excursions
Ideal for edentulous patients -> full dentures

35
Q

is balanced occlusion possible?

A

not in dentate patients
