Dyanamics and Space Flashcards
memorise
Speed
the distance travelled by an object per second
Average speed
average for the whole journey (total distance travelled divided by the time taken)
d=vt
distance (m) =speed (m/s) time (s)
scalar
quantity is completely described by stating its magnitude (size) only
vector
quantity completely descirbed by stating its magnitude and direction.
scalars:
- distance
- speed
- mass
- time
- energy
Vectors:
- displacement
- velocity
- force
- acceleration
total distance travelled regardless of the direction
distance
the length measured from the start point to the end point in a straight line
displacement
Acceleration
the change in speed (or velocity) every second
F = ma
unbalanced force (N) = mass (m) acceleration (ms)
energy (J)
cannot be destroyed, but it can be changed from one form into another
Work done
is a measure of the energy transformed
Ew = Fs
Work (J) = Force (F) displacement (m)
Weight
is a force caused by gravity acting on an object’s mass
Gravitational Field Strength
weight per unit mass
W = mg
Weight (N) = mass (kg) gravitational field strength (Nkg-1)
Satellite
an object that orbits another object
Period
time taken for the satellite to complete one orbit
Applications of Satellites:
- Sending a Television or radio signal
- Navigation
- Weather monitoring
Star
a hot ball of matter which is undergoing nuclear fusion emitting light
A spherical ball of rock and/ or gas which orbits a star
Planet
A lump of matter which orbits a planet
Moon
consists of star and all the objects orbiting
Solar System
