What are the DVLA rules?

A

If a patient drives after being advised not to, their insurance is invalid and they are breaking the law

What are the time frames for certain conditions?

A

Diabetes - no immediate restriction
First unprovoked seizure - 6 months
Other seizure - 1 year
Stroke/TIA - 1 month
Unexplained syncope - 6 months
Treated cardiac syncope, or seated vaso-vagal - 1 month
MI treated with stent - 1 week

What happens if a patient fails to comply?

A
  • It is the doctors duty to advise the patient not to drive and advise them to inform the DVLA
  • If the patient refuses and says they will continue driving, involve a senior and have multiple conversations
  • If they still insist, break confidentiality and inform the DVLA
