Ductal Papilloma Flashcards
What is it?
Benign breast tumour that forms in a milk duct.
These tumours are made of gland and fibrous tissue as well as blood vessels.
Who does it effect?
- Most common in women between ages 35 and 55.
What are the causes?
Just breast aging and changes.
Breast cancer risk?
Lumps further from nipple = multiple papillomas = higher risk of breast cancer.
Symptoms?
- Breast enlargement
- Lumps
- Pain
- Nipple discharge: 80% have bloody discharge - of less than 6 months duration.
Signs on examination?
Too small to palpate. Discharge from nipple
Tenderness
Investigations you would do:
Breast ultrasound
mammogram
breast biopsy can be performed to rule out cancer.
Differential diagnosis?
Fibrocystic disease
ductal carcinoma in situ
invasive ductal carcinoma
papillary carcinoma of the breast.
Treatment
surgery to remove the papilloma and the affected part of the milk duct (microdochectomy). - under general anaesthesia.
