Some men were believed to have two different lives one good and one bad. This is shown in Jekyll and Hyde as Jekyll has a 2 lives one good and one bad. But this is taken a bit further as Jekyll technically got 2 lives. This suggests that men including Jekyll have double side to them where in this novel Jekyll shows his good side and Hyde shows his bad side.
