DT Year 8 Flashcards
What can a 3D drawing be used for?
To show how a product will look when it is completed
What is a process?
Middle stage of product design; outcome of the e input before it changes into the output
What is a specification?
Detailed description of design and materials used to make product
What is the full form of ACCESS FM?
Aesthetics, Cost, Customer, Environment, Safety, Size, Function, Material
What is an acrylic?
Thermoforming polymer which is hard, brittle, shiny, can be cut, weather resistant
What is a pewter?
Lead-free alloy that can easily be cast, has a low melting point and is very soft
Name the two types of plastic moulding processes
Blow and injection moulding
What is hardwood?
Strong wood that comes from deciduous trees, less sustainable, usually used in high quality furniture e.g. oak, teak
What is softwood?
Less durable wood that comes from evergreen trees, is cheap, lightning colour, usually used in cheap constructions, e.g. pine, cedar
What are ferrous metals?
Metals that contain iron, are magnetic, have a high melting point, good electric conductors, usually used to make bridges, e.g. mild steel, cast iron
What are thermoforming plastics?
Plastics that can be moulded back in and out of shape, have low melting point, usually used for roofs or vehicle parts, e.g. acrylic, ABS
What are thermosetting plastics?
Plastics that can’t be reshaped, unrecyclable, heat and electric resistant, usually used for circuit boards and electric fittings, e.g. melamine
What is an adhesive?
A substance used to bond the surfaces of materials
Name different types of adhesives
Polyvinyl acetate(PVA), Epoxy resin(ER), contact adhesive
What is PVA used for?
As a woodworking glue, can also be used for paper and boards
What is ER used for?
Used to join woods to other materials
What is contact adhesive used for?
Used to join various materials, must dry after being applied before joining
What are abrasives used for?
To remove excess material and smoothen surfaces after using materials e.g. sandpaper, emery cloth, steel wool
What are quality symbols?
Symbols that signify standards set by industry or government to certain products
What does a CE Mark show?
That a product meets EU safety standards
What does a BSI Mark show?
That a product meets standards of British Standards Institution
What does a trade logo show?
That a product belongs to a certain company’s standards
What are the purposes of packaging design?
Show product is cost effective, to catch attention, to provide information regarding product
What is the purpose of wood joints?
To join timber together
What is offset lithography?
The main commercial printing method that uses cyan, magenta, yellow, black
What is die cutting?
A commercial printing process that pushes a sharp blade through paper or card
Name four scales of production
Prototype, Batch, Mass and Continuous
