DT Unit 1 Data and Information Flashcards
What is data?
Raw, unorganised facts that need to be processed.
What is information?
When data is processed or given a certain context as to make it useful.
What is sample rate?
Sample rate is how many samples of an audio recording or sound per second.
What is bit rate?
The bit rate of a file or audio tells you how many bits can be processed per second.
What is Bit Depth?
Bit depth is the number of bit’s available to store sound samples.
What does ADC stand for?
Analogue to Digital Converter
What does ADC do?
Converts sound waves to digital waves (measured in Hz).
What is streaming?
Streaming is listening to music or watching a video in real time instead of downloading a file to your computer to watch later.
Pros of streaming
- Accessible
- Doesn’t take up storage
Cons of streaming.
- Costly
- Need internet connection
What is buffering?
Buffering is preloading data to a reserved area of memory.
What is the buffer?
The buffer is the name for the area of memory where data is pre loaded.
What is a pixel?
A pixel is a square, the smallest unit of a digital image that can be displayed and edited on a computer screen.
What is image resolution?
Image resolution tells us the quality of an image, the more pixels the higher the quality and sharpness of the picture.
What is a bitmap?
A bitmap is an image made up of individual bits where each bit represents one pixel.
What is a vector?
A vector is an image that is completely described using mathematical definitions.
What is data portability?
It is the ability to transfer data from one computer to another without having to re enter the data.
What is compression?
Data needs to be compressed to make files easier to send or store.
What is Lossy Compression?
Lossy reduces the file size by removing data such as taking colours out of a photo.
What is Lossless Compression?
Lossless reduces a file without effecting quality.
What is JPEG?
Joint Photographic Experts Group- compressed image file.
What is TIFF?
Tagged Image File Format- larger than JPEGS, can be used between Apple and Microsoft.
What is PNG?
Portable Network Graphics- sharing graphics over internet maintaining quality.
What is GIF?
Graphics Interchange Format- usually small in size, can be animated.
What is TXT?
Plain document with no formatting. Opened by any word processor.
What is CSV?
Comma Separated Value- used by databases.
What is RTF?
Rich Text File- basic formatting, scanners usually store in this type.
What is MP3?
Compress audio only but keeps quality.
What is MP4?
Compresses sound and video- allows streaming over the internet.
What is MIDI?
Musical Instrument Digital Interface- allows sound samples to be interchanged between digital musical instruments.
What is MPEG?
Moving Pictures Expert Group- digital video files
What is AVI?
Audio Video Interleaved- Microsoft file for audio and video on Microsoft only.
What is PDF?
Portable Document Format- captures formatting of documents but are read only and smaller in size.
What is WAV?
Windows Audio Waveform- audio for PCs
