DST Flashcards
Founding date
January 13, 1913
Why was DST created? How?
Stemmed from the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha. 22 members of AKA wanted to become apart of societal changes such as laws that protected civil rights and womenβs rights. They wanted to make AKA focus on issues of today with a national perspective. They also didnβt think AKA had done everything to become an a legal entity, official/incorporated sorority rather than a club. Some also felt that AKA was stuck in the shadow of Alpha Phi alpha. Nellie winger wanted DST to drop the name and return to AKA; however, 22 undergraduates declined

Creation of the South Atlantic Region
During the 26th National Convention held in Chicago, Illinois, August 1960, the directive was given by then National President, Jeanne Noble, to proceed with the creation of a new region β The South Atlantic Region. The creation of the South Atlantic region made it the seventh region of the sorority. The Southern Region, which then included South Carolina, and the Eastern Region, of which North Carolina and Virginia were a part, were much too large for effective relationships both in travel and programming. The geographical proximity, the common pressures of social issues, and the inherent feeling of state kinship which is shared by Virginia and the Carolinas made the union a more logical one.
