Name the 3 phases of schizophrenia
Prodromal Phase: decline in role functioning which leads to,
Active Phase: full blown symptoms of schizophrenia (delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech)
Residual Phase: psychotic symptoms improve, but with continued impairment.
Paranoid Schizophrenia
Prominent delusions, typically the persecutory or grandiose type, auditory hallucinations, other common symptoms of schizophrenia are not prominent.
Disorganized Type Schizophrenia
Indicated by disorganized speech and behavior as well as flat or inappropriate affect.
Catatonic Type Schizophrenia
Minimum of 2 of the following:
Motor immobility of catalepsy ( rigid maintenance of posture for extended period of time)
Excessive purposeless movement unrelated to external stimuli.
Negativism ( resistance to being moved, direction, rigid posturing) or mutism
Odd or inappropriate posturing, repetitive functionless movements, facial grimacing
Echolalia (repeating the words of others) or echopraxia (mimicking movements of another)
