What is the criteria for a current major depressive episode?

A

Within the last month, there was a 2 week period where the participant had at least 1 of the following:

  • Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day
  • Diminished interest in activities

And at least 4 of the following:

  • Significant change in weight
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia nearly every day
  • Psychomotor agitation or retardation
  • Fatigue nearly every day
  • Worthlessness and feelings of guilt nearly every day
  • Difficulty concentrating nearly every day
  • Recurring thoughts of death

That is:
- Causing clinically significant distress
E.g. social, relationships, occupational, hygiene etc.

Not related to drugs or better explained by another condition

What is the criteria for persistent depressive disorder?

A

The participant has experienced a depressed mood for 2 years or more with 2 or more of the following:

  • Poor appetite and over-eating
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Low self-esteem
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feelings of hopelessness

CHECK: What was the longest period of time you have felt ok? If more than 2 months, not PDD.

What is the criteria for a past/current manic episode?

A

1 week where the participant has had an abnormally elevated or irritable mood with an abnormal increase in energy.

Plus 3 of the following:

  • Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity
  • Decreased need for sleep
  • More talkative than usual
  • Flight of ideas/racing thoughts
  • Distracted (reported or observed)
  • Increase in goal-directed activity e.g., work, sex
  • Excessive involvement in activities with high potential of painful consequences

Clinical impairment e.g. work, hygiene, relationships, can be psychotic symptoms, hospitalisation

Not related to drugs or better explained by another medical condition.

What is the criteria for a past/current hypomanic episode?

A

A) At least 4 days where the participant has had an abnormally elevated or irritable mood with an abnormal increase in energy.

B) Plus 3 of the following (4 if only irritable):

  • Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity
  • Decreased need for sleep
  • More talkative than usual
  • Flight of ideas/racing thoughts
  • Distracted (reported or observed)
  • Increase in goal-directed activity e.g., work, sex
  • Excessive involvement in activities with high potential of painful consequences

C) All three present:

  • Different behaviour than usual
  • Observable to others
  • No marked impairment e.g., socially, no hospitalisation, no psychotic features

A

Presence of delusions:

  • delusions of reference e.g., people taking special notice, message through TV/radio
  • persecutory delusion e.g., being followed, attacked
  • grandiose delusion e.g., special powers/knowledge

Presence of hallucinations:

  • auditory hallucinations
  • visual hallucinations
  • tactile hallucinations

What is the criteria for PTSD?

A

A) Exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury or sexual violence

  • Direct exposure
  • Witness
  • Close family member
  • Repeated exposure to aversive details (not media)

B) Presence of 1 or more of the following beginning after the traumatic event:

  • Intrusive memories
  • Recurring distressing dreams
  • Dissociative reactions e.g., flashbacks
  • Psychological distress e.g., strong emotional response to reminders
  • Physiological reactions e.g., heart racing, breathing heavily to reminders

C) 1 or more of the following:

  • Avoidance of distressing memories, thoughts or feelings
  • Avoidance of external reminders

D) 2 or more of the following:

  • Inability to remember an important aspect of traumatic events
  • Persistent negative beliefs e.g., no one can be trusted
  • Persistent, distorted thoughts about the cause of event
  • Persistent negative emotional state
  • Marked diminished interest or participation in activities
  • Feelings of detachment
  • Inability to experience positive emotions

E) 2 or more of the following:

  • Irritable/angry outbursts
  • Reckless or self-destructive behaviour
  • Hyper-vigilance
  • Exaggerated startle response
  • Problems with concentration
  • Sleep disturbance

F and G) Occurring for more than 1 month and clinically significant distress

A

A) Marked fear/anxiety about 2 or more of the following:

  • Using public transport
  • Being in open spaces
  • Being in enclosed spaces
  • Standing in line or being in a crowd
  • Being outside of the home alone

B) Avoids these feared places in case of a panic-like attack

C) Situations nearly always provoke fear/anxiety

D) Situations actively avoided unless with trusted companion or endured with intense fear/anxiety

E) Out of proportion (other illnesses may impact this!)

F) 6+ months

G) Clinically significant distress

Check not better explained by other disorder and/or substance use

What is the criteria for current/past panic disorder?

A

2 panic attacks ‘out of the blue’
A and B occurring within the last month for current PD

A) Main symptom:

  • A rush of anxiety, where suddenly felt very frightened and/or suddenly developed a lot of physical symptoms
  • Reached the peak in a matter of minutes

B) Followed by 1 month of 1 of the following:

  • Worry about subsequent attacks
  • Maladaptive change in behaviour related to attacks (e.g., avoid unfamiliar places)

During the attacks 4 of the following:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Feelings of choking
  • Chest pain/discomfort
  • Nausea or abdominal distress
  • Feeling dizzy or faint
  • Chills or heat sensations
  • Parasthesias (tingling sensation)
  • Derealisation or depersonalisation
  • Fear of losing control
  • Fear of dying

Check not due to drugs and/or other diagnoses
