DSM-5 definition of trauma
Requires “actual or threatened death, serious injury or sexual violence”…Psychological stressors are not by this definition a trauma
DSM-5 definition of PTSD
Much more than being “shaken up” after an incident. It’s a severe psychological condition, defined by;
1. persistent re-experiencing event
2. avoidance of things that are associated with event
3. a “numbing of general responsiveness”
4. Increased arousal e.g sleeplessness
5. impairment in social or work functioning
What does ‘EPCACE’ stand for?
Enduring
Personality
Change
After
Catastrophic
Events
-A personality change that lasts a longtime possibly forever.
What is ‘complex PTSD’
Identical symptoms to PTSD which are acquired through multiple unpleasant or threatening events over an extended period of time at home or at work.
Why is ‘effects a good word?
People may be affected by the traumatic experiences they go through but might not see themselves as Ill or having PTSD, so they may not like symptoms.. Effects may be better suited i.e. “How has that/this affected you
Sources of trauma
-a single major traumatic event
-‘adverse childhood experiences’ or abuse or misfortune during childhood
-More recent experiences at work or at home or else where
*Assume that the person may have a PTSD-like condition, so act accordingly.
Give an example of a trauma
Not being able to save a friend from a fatal situation i.e. drowning
