What is the definition of a mental disorder in the DSM
Syndrome-A set of related conditions of of clinically significant disturbances of thoughts, feelings or behaviours
How does Di nardo support the DSM?

How does Hoffmann support the DSM
Looked at the different diagnosis of alcohol abuse dependence and cocaine dependence to see if a difference showed up in a structured interview that was computer prompted and to see if they corresponded to the DSM criteria. He found that DSM diagnosis was valid and that the data supported the idea that dependence was more serious than abuse.
What is a criticism of the DSM
it could be considered as a form of social control. Psychiatrists hold a lot of power in diagnosis and could match a healthy persons mild symptoms to a much more severe diagnosis
Application of the DSM
DSM five has a big influence on how mental health is thought about and treated in the UK help set research agendas brings conditions into the public eye and influences. Clinical guidelines are increasing self diagnosing however from websites based on the DSM which put pressure on doctors to know about these diagnosis.
What does the DSM cover?
All mental health disorders for both children and adults it also shows known causes of these disorders, statistics in terms of gender, age at onset and prognosis.
What is the manual useful for?
Better understanding patients and there illnesses and potential treatment and to help third-party players understand the needs of the patient. Eg insurance companies
