DSA 1: Evidence Based OMT Flashcards
In the beginning of the 1900s, what type of research was encouraged at DO COMs?
- Neural and physiologic aspects of Somatic Dysfunctions
- Effects of OMT on symptoms and immune function
What did Dr. Louisa Burns research?
Impact of somatic dysfunction
- induced bony lesions in animals and documented their physiologic and anatomic effects on brain, heart, GI tract, reproductive organs and kidneys
- her work focused on the physiology of the nervous system in relationship to clinical palpation findings
What did Dr. Wilbur V. Cole II research?
Anatomic neurology
-worked closely with Dr. Louisa Burns
What did Dr. John Stedman Denslow advocate for?
Use of scientific instruments and measurements for the validation of osteopathic clinical findings and outcomes
-EMG to study effects of somatic dysfunction upon muscle reflexes and ANS
What did Dr. Irvin Korr research?
Interaction between skeletal muscle and ANS
- proposed facilitated segment
- identified the trophic function of nerves, whereby nerves conduct protein substances, other than neurotransmitters, to the organs they innervate
What did Dr. William Johnston do?
Improve recording methods
- reliability studies
- validity studies
- viscerosomatic reflexes
What are challenges to OMM research?
- “Objective” findings that can only be appreciated by a subjective experience
- Variability in the skills of those applying OMM or OMT
- Resources required to administer OMT to enough patients to achieve a well powered study
- Randomized Controlled Trials work well for studying a small number of known variables that are easily measured
Does OMT on middle ear effusion help?
May result in faster resolution of MEE
Does OMT on patients with lower extremity ulcers work?
May have reduced edema and reversed the trend of wound growth in patients with venous stasis ulcers
Does OMT help improve chronic sinusitis?
After OMT, utilizing direct pressure and sinus drainage technique, the overall sinus pain/congestion for all patients improved
Is OMT safe during pregnancy?
Results suggest that the OMT protocol given during the third trimester of pregnancy as applied in the PROMOTE study is safe with regard to labor and delivery outcomes.
How is OMM cost effective?
• Decreased length of hospital stay, duration of antibiotic use, etc.
-helps healthcare system
