23
Q

Boston Personalism

A

Led by Borden Parker Bowne, it promoted self-conscience, individualism as opposed to divine grace. It connected Holiness theology to orthodoxy as an old thought. Social gospel and progressive theology immerged from Boston Personalism as a new way of thinking theology. Because of the liberalism and progressiveness of BU, Morrison started Asbury Theological Seminary as an alternative to renew holiness theology, and historical Wesleyan teachings.

24
Q

WMC

A

Led by Orange Scott, Wesleyan Methodist Church was a denomination formed by abolitionists, with anti-slavery and anti-intemperance ideas. It was grounded on Wesley’s idea of entire sanctification, and heavy focus on Holiness. They are pro the Holiness movement. They split from the Methodist Episcopal Church, which he believed was drifting away from Wesley’s teachings.

25
Q

MC

A

Formed in 1939 with merger of MEC, MEC-S and MPC. Eventually merges with EUB in 1968 to make the UMC. It was an enormous compromise leading to the creation of the central jurisdiction, judicial council and the council of bishops. MC pushes for more laity representatives at conference level. Black Methodist voted against the unifying conference because it created segregation.

26
Q

Quadrilateral

A

This method based its teaching on four sources as the basis of theological and doctrinal development, scripture, tradition, reason, and experience. For Wesley, Scripture should be taken in a primitive form. Tradition should be interpreted through the lens of patristic tradition. Reason had to do with the system of logic Wesley learned in Oxford. Experience has nothing to do with personal experience, but with our Christian experience (Wesley’s experience in Aldersgate). John Wesley never used these four forms in the same phrase. Albert Outler created the quadrilateral to create doctrinal commonality, because of theological pluralism.
