Dryers Flashcards
Dryer
Equipment used for the removal of a relatively small amount of water or other liquid form the solid materials by forcing either ambient or heated air through the materials
Classification of dryers
- Continuous flow dryers
- Batch Dryers
Continuous Flow Dryers
Used by larger milling enterprises that handle large volumes of wet paddy. Usually consists of either mixing or non-mixing columnar dryers with different systems of airflow with respect to the grain
Batch Dyers
Classification of dryer wherein drying is accomplished by batch. The volume of grain is fixed by the holding capacity of the equipment.
Types of Continuous flow dryers
- Cross flow dryers - the grain moves downward while the air moves horizontally through the grains.
- Concurrent flow dryers - the air moves in the same direction as the grain
- Counter flow dryers - the air moves upward against the movement of the grain
- Mixed flow dryers - use continuous mixing effect to produce the best quality grains.
Types of Dryers
- Rotary dryer
- Tower dryer
- Hearth Dryer
- Centrifugal Dryer
- Tray Dryer
- Infrared Dyer
Rotary Dryer
Most commonly used dryer which consists of a rotating cylinder inside which the materials flow while getting in contact with the hot gases. Used for copra, sand, wood chips.
Tower Dryer
Consists of a vertical shaft in which the wet feed is introduced at the top and falls downward over baffles while coming in contact with the hot air which rises and exhausts at the top. used for palay, wheat, grains.
Hearth Dyer
Material to be dried is supported on the floor through which the gat gases pass. used for copra, coal, enamel wares.
Centrifugal Dryer
Consists of a centrifuge revolving at high speeds causing the separation of water from the material. Used for fertilizer, sugar, salt.
Tray Dryer
Consists of trays, carrying them materials to be dried, placed in a compartment or moving conveyor. Used for ipil-ipil leaves, grains.
Infrared Ray Dryer
Consists of infrared lamps in which the rays are directed to the articles to be dried. Used for drying painted articles like cars.
