Common Antidepressants:
Tricyclics
Uses to treat: Depressive Disorders, panic disorders Common examples: Amitriptylene (elavil, Endep) Imipramine (Tofranil) Clomipramine (Anafranil) Nortriptyline (Pamelor) Desipramine (Norpramin) Protriptylene (Vivactil) Doxepin (Sinequan) Trimipramine (Surmontil)
Possible side effects: Drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, weight gain.
Common Antidepressants:
MAO Inhibitors
Used to treat: Depressive disorders that do not respond well to other antidepressants
Common examples:
Phenelzine (Nardil)
Tranclypromine (Parnate)
Possible side effects: low BP, drowsiness, constipation, dizziness, rash
Common Antidepressants:
SSRI’s (Selective Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitors *increase serotonin in the brain)
Used to treat: Depression, panic disorder, OCD, bulimia, social phobia, PTSD, PMS, BPD
Common examples: Citalopram (Celexa) Escitalopram (Lexapro) Fluoxetine (Prozac) Paroxetine (Paxil) Fluvoxamine (Luvox) Sertraline (Zoloft)
Possible side effects: Fewer side effects than other antidepressants, more likely to depress libido

Trazodone (Desyrel) - decreases insomnia
Duloxetine (Cymbalta) - serotonin & norepinephrine inhibitor
Mirtazapine (Remeron) decreases insomina
Venlafaxine (Effexor) - also approved for social anxiety disorder
Mood Stabilizers
Used to treat bipolar disorders
Common examples:
Lithium carbonate (Eskalith, Lithobid)
Anti-convulsants: Lamotrigine (Lamictal), Valproic acid (Depakote), Topiramate (Topamax)

Anxiety, Insomnia, tension, muscle spasams, agoraphobia, anticipatory anxiety, OCD, panic disorders, PTSD, tobacco use, alcohol withdrawal

Possible side effects: most cause drowsiness, dizziness, or confusion. Breathing difficulties, headaches, nausea, nervousness, excitement, some addiction potential

They help reduce excitability, improve ability to communicate, lessen confusion & withdrawal, improve ability to separate reality and fantasy, & control hallucinations
