Drugs In Renal Heaptic And Cardiac Disease Flashcards
What is one major effect of congestive heart failure?
Pooling of fluid in lungs and/or extremities due to the kidney attempts to retain fluid.
If pooling is in lungs this indicates left sided heart failure
If pooling is in extremities this indicates right sided heart failure
What is the most relevant type of cardiac disease in terms of its influence on drug action?
Congestive heart failure (often linked to ischaemic heart disease). this leads to an inadequate cardiac output as the heart is not flexible enough to pump enough blood around the body, resulting in not enough blood and oxygen causing cell stress and death.
Where does SNS induced blood flow primarily go to?
The skeletal muscle, lungs, heart and brain
What is the effect of SNS inducted blood flow on drug absoprtion?
Oral drug absorption will decrease as there is decreased blood flow to the gut. E.g. Digoxin
What is the effect of the volume of distribution in CHF?
This will decrease due to a reduced distribution of the blood around the body
