Common Chemo Toxicities
A
- ALopecia
- Mucositis
- N/V
- Bone marrow suppression (anemia, leukopenia/neutropenia/thrombopenia)
- Long term effects may include infertility and secondary malignancies
- *be aware that many chemo drugs are vesicants** (infiltrate)

What is Cancer
A
- Abnormal cell division. Often uncontrolled
- Cells lose normal function and differentiation
- Can travel to distant sites and create new turmoils (metastasis)
Smoking, obesity, alcohol, UV radiation, poor diet, inactivity, etc

Chemo Precautions
A
Use appropriate PPE
Signage outside of room
DIspose of IVbags, tubing, packaging, etc in appropriate container
Be aware of how to handle spills
Patient body fluids are considered contaminated for at least 48 hours after last dose
Know your hospitals policies
Some “non-chemo” medications may require “chemo precautions”
Chemo certification is often required for administration
*two pairs of chemo gloves, specific gown
