Anxiety
State of apprehension, tension, or uneasiness
Generalized anxiety disorder
Difficult to control, lasting 6 months or more. Most common stress disorder.
Panic disorder
Characterized by feelings of immediate, apprehension,fearfulness, terror, or impending doom. Panic attacks last less then 10 min.
Phobias
Fearful feelings attached to specific objects or situations.
Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Develops in response to re-experiencing a previous traumatic event. Combat experience, physical or sexual abuse, etc.
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
Recurrent, disturbing thoughts or repetitive behaviors that interfere with a person’s normal activities or relationships.
Limbic system
Area of brain responsible for emotional expression, learning, and memory. Signals through limbic system connect with hypothalamus.
Hypothalamus
Important center triggering unconscious responses to extreme stress; increased B/P, elevated breathing rate, and dilated pupils.
Reticular formation
Network of neurons found along entire length of brainstem; causes increased alertness and arousal; inhibition causes drowsiness and sleep.
Reticular activating system (RAS)
Controls sleeping and wakefulness and performs an alerting function for the cerebral cortex.
Anxiolytics
Drugs having the ability to relieve anxiety.
Rebound insomnia
When a sedative drug is stopped abruptly or when it has been taken for a long time and drug dependence occurs.
Antidepressants
Enhance mood by 2 neurotransmitters; norepinephrine and serotonin. By restoring balance drugs can reduce symptoms associated with depression, panic, OCD, and phobia.
CNS depressants
Slow neuronal activity in the brain; drugs range from those that relax, those that sedate, to sleep and anesthesia. Coma and death are the end stages of CNS depression.
Sedatives
Drugs that depress the CNS, ability to sedate. And relax a pt.
Sedative-hypnotic
Drug with ability to produce a calming effect at lower doses and sleep at higher doses.
