drugs categories Flashcards
cholinergic drugs
mimic the PNS - rest and digest
anti-cholinergic drugs
block PNS symptoms - symptoms are similar to SNS
adrenergic drugs
mimic the SNS
adrenergic antagonists
block SNS symptoms - symptoms are similar to PNS
• Nicotinic N- Neural
o Location: all autonomic nervous system ganglia and the adrenal medulla
o Response to activation: stimulation of parasympathetic and sympathetic postganglionic nerves and release of epinephrine from the adrenal medulla
• Nicotinic M – Muscular
o Location: Neuromuscular junction
o Response: Contraction of skeletal muscles
• Muscarinic – located on target organs of PNS – activation causes
o Location: All parasympathetic target organs
o Responses:
Eyes: contraction of the ciliary muscle focuses lens for near vision
Eyes: Contraction of the iris sphincter muscle causes miosis (constriction)
Heart: Decreased rate
Lung: constriction of bronchi, promotion of secretions
Bladder: urine to leave bladder
GI Tract: salivation, increased gastric secretions, increased intestinal tome and motility, defecation
Sweat glands: generalized sweating
Sex organs: erection
Blood vessels: vasodilation
• Alpha1
o Location: Eye
Response: Contraction of the radial muscle of the iris causes mydriasis – pupil dilation
o Location: Arterioles – skin, viscera, mucous membranes
Response: constriction
o Location: Veins
Response: Constriction
o Location: Sex Organs – Male
Response – Ejaculation
o Location: Bladder
Response: Contraction of trigone and sphincter – cant pee
• Alpha 2
o Location: Presynaptic nerve terminals
Response: inhibition of transmitter release
• Beta 1
o Location: Heart
Response: increases rate, increased force of contraction, increased AV conduction velocity
o Location: Kidneys
Response: Release of renin
• Beta 2
o Location: Arterioles of the heart, lung, skeletal muscles Response: dilation o Location: Bronchi Response: dilation o Uterus Response relaxation o Liver Gycogenolysis o Skeletal Muscles Enhanced contraction, glycogenolysis
• Dopamine
o Location: Kidney
Dilation of kidney vasculature
