Drug
Any substance that causes a change in a person’s physical or psychological state
Medicine
A drug used to cure, prevent, or treat illness
Good medicine has these qualities
Effectiveness, safe, and minor/minimal side effects
Prescription
A written order from a doctor for specific medicine and amount of the medicine
Over-the-counter medicine
Purchased without prescription. Sold on the shelves of stores and pharmacies
6 ways drugs enter the body
Implanted pump (insulin), inhalation, injection, transdermal (patches), ingestion, and topical (absorbed through skin)
Tolerance
The cells of the body change and adapt, now more of the drug is needed to feel the original effects
Dependence
The drug of choice must be in your system at all times for you to function at day to day activities, withdrawal symptoms develop upon cessation
Addiction
A condition of the brain’s reward system in which people pursue a relief/reward by substance use. Cannot control drug use. Can be physical and psychological
Drug abuse
A person takes a drug for no medical reason
Drug Misuse
A person medically uses a drug but takes the wrong amount, skips days, or wrong method of intake
