Drugs and testing Flashcards
What are the 3 stages of drug testing?
Preclinical
Animal trials
Human clinical trials
What happens in preclinical trials?
Drugs are tested on human cells grown in labs, this allows efficacy and possible side effects to be tested
What happens in animal trials?
Animals are given a known amount of substance to the animal then monitor them carefully for side effects
What happens in the the 1st stage of human trials?
Range of doses is used on a small amount of participants to see if the drug is safe to use
What happens in the 2nd stage of human trials?
Tested on a small group of patients to test efficacy
What happens in the 3rd stage of human trials?
-Drug is given to a large group of participants to test efficacy and side effects
-Double blind trial
Explain Withering’s digitalis soup experiment
He isolated the active ingredient from foxglove and then tested different doses on patients and recorded the findings, led to the development of contemporary drug testing protocols.
Explain why placebos are used to test the efficacy of new drug treatments
-Can be used as a comparative to see how effective a new drug actually is
-You can clearly see the effect of the new drug
-No psychological effect
