Drugs Flashcards
Methylphenidate
Ritalin
A stimulant
MOA: Blocks reuptake of transmitter into pre-synaptic terminal
Citalopram
SSRI: one of the most common anti- depressants
Brand Name: Celexa
Lithium
Used for treating bipolar disorder
Protective against suicide
Carbamazepine
Anti- seizure medication
Lots of side effects and drug interactions
Sertraline
Also known as Zoloft: SSRI antidepressant
Cisplatin
Chemotherapy
Class: Direct DNA damaging: cross linkers
MOA: Loss of chloride ion results in unstable molecule that reacts with DNA and leads to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis
Catecholamine
Organic compound derived from tyrosine featuring a benzene ring, 2 hydroxyls and amine
Ex: epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine
Amphetamine
A psycho-stimulant also known as 1- phenylpropan-2-amine
MOA: Increases release of neurotransmitters and blocks reuptake. Works on dopamine, norepinephrine , and serotonin
It’s derivatives include: crystal meth, and MDMA(ecstasy)
Lorazepam
Used to treat anxiety, anxiety with depression, and insomnia. A benzodiazepine.
Medium duration but easier on the liver-> med abuse potential
Imipramine
TCA antidepressant
Blocks reuptake (uptake 1= NET) of serotonin and norepinephrine
Selegaline
Inhibits MAO-b ( blocks degradation of dopamine). Used in Parkinson’s
Carbidopa
Inhibits L-AAD in periphery to maximize dopa delivery to brain. Used in Parkinson’s
Disulfiram
Inhibits ALDH. Results in horrible hangover. Used to treat alcohol dependence
Shows promise in treating cocaine dependence ( raises DA, lowers NE)
Naltrexone
Opiate antagonist. Used for preventing alcohol relapse (only for specific mu receptor genotype- moa unclear) and heroin
Buprenorphine
Partial opiate agonist. Used for detox. Should be taken orally. Can be abused if IV use
Suboxone
Buprenorphine( partial opiate agonist) and Naloxone (opiate antagonist)
Antagonist only active if IV use. Meant to prevent abuse of buprenorphine
Bupropion 5-R
Originally marketed as anti-depressant. Now used for aiding in smoking cessation. More effective than nicotine substitution. Has dopaminergic properties
Varenicline
Used for smoking cessation. Partial agonist at a4b2 nicotinic cholinergic receptor. Relieves craving without reward.
Very effective but side effect profile includes higher risk of CV and depression and nausea
Topiramate
Anticonvulsant which is very effective in treating alcohol dependency. Has a high side effect profile because interacts with lots of Neuro transmitters
Shows promise for treating cocaine dependency (blocks ampa, increases GABA a transmission)
