Adrenaline actions
Adrenaline is a sympathomimetic that stimulates both alpha and beta adrenergic receptors. As a result myocardial and cerebral look flow is enhanced during CPR & CPR becomes more effective due to increased peripheral resistance which improves perfusion pressures.
Reverses allergic manifestations of acute anaphylaxis
Relieves bronchospasm in acute asthma

Adrenaline contra-indications
Do not give repeated doses of adrenaline in hypothermic patients
Indications for adrenaline 1:10,000
Cardiac arrest
Administration of adrenaline in cardiac arrest
Shockable rhythms administer adrenaline after the 3rd shock and then alternate shocks eg… 5th, 7th etc…
Non-shockable rhythms - administer adrenaline immediately IV access is achieved then alternate loops
Adult dosage of adrenaline in anaphylaxis or life threatening asthma
Initial dose of 500 micrograms which can be repeated after 5 minutes with no limit to maximum dose
Adult dosage of adrenaline in cardiac arrest
I milligram repeated every 3 to 5 minutes with no limit to maximum dose
In cases of anaphylaxis in adult patients taking tricyclic antidepressants (eg amitriptyline , imipramine) what would the dose of adrenaline be?
Administer half doses… 250 micrograms
Cautions for adrenaline
Severe hypertension may occur in patients on beta blockers and half doses should be administered unless there is profound hypotension
