How does 5ASA (Mesalazine) work?
**Action - **Anti inflammatory by affection prostaglandins and free radicals. Topical or oral
How do Corticosteroids work?
**Action - **It increased ACTH and cortisol and therefore decreases inflammation
N.B - This has to be reduced slowly due to -ve feedback and can cause osteoporosis so give bisphosphonates
Cushings side effects
How does Ciclosporin work?
Action - It inhibits the action of T cells. It can only be given IV and for a maximum of 7 days
No use in Crohns
How does Infliximab work?
Action - This is given if ciclosporin is contraindicated and is Anti TNF
How does Azithioprine (AZA/6MP) work?
Action - The action is unknown but it suppresses the immune sysem.
It is cytotoxic to the bone marrow do check TPMT
How does Adalimumab work?
Action - Anti TNF - Subcut
How does Methotrexate work?
This is only given as a last resort for Chrons remission
Action - Anti inflammatory and immunosuppressant
It is given if Azathioprine isnt working
It has to be given once a week.
Give with folic acid
Which drug can dissolve the giving set and has no use in crohns?
