Controlled substances
A drug that is natural or manufactured substance affecting psychological behaviour
Many are legally prescribed for therapeutic or medical purposes
Drugs of abuse
Misuse of Drugs Act 1971
Main legislation controlling drugs in the UK.
Primarily aimed at preventing the unauthorised use of specific substances
Categorisation of drugs dependant on the harm engendered by their misuse
Penalties that apply to offences relating to drugs are governed by their classification.
Class A Legislation
Possession: Up to 7 years in prison and an unlimited fine
Supply and Production: Up to 14 years in prison and an unlimited fine
Crack, Cocain, MDMA, Heroin, LSD, Magic Mushrooms, Methadone, Methamphetamine
Class B Legislation
Possession: Up to 5 years in prison and an unlimited fine
Supply and production: Up to 14 years in prison and an unlimited fine
Amphetamines, Barbiturates, Cannabis, Codeine, Ketamine
Class C legislation
Possession: Up to 2 years in prison and an unlimited fine
Supply and production: Up to 14 years in prison and an unlimited fine
Anabolic steroids, Benzodiazepines, gamma hydroxybutyrate
Psychoactive Substances Act 2016
26th May 2016
Banned all psychoactive substances known as legal highs
Offence to produce, supply, offer to supply, possess with intent to supply or import and export.
Drug Dependences
Psychological Dependence
- The conditioned use of a drug caused by underlying emotional needs
Physical Dependence
- Regular use of a drug to the point that the effects do not fully wear off, leading to withdrawal sickness when administration is stopped abruptly
Stimulants
Primarily stimulate brain activity
- Amphetamines / Cocaine
Speed up the messages travelling between the brain and body.
Large doses can cause over stimulation, resulting in anxiety, panic, seizures, headaches, stomach cramps, aggression and paranoia
Depressants
Primarily inhibit brain activity
- Alcohol / Barbiturates / Benzodiazepines / heroin
Reduce arousal and stimulation
Affect the CNS slowing down messages between the brain and body
Can affect concentration and coordination and slow down a person’s ability to respond to unexpected situations
Hallucinogens
Induces alteration in perception and mood
- Ecstasy / LSD / Cannabis
Hallucinogens (Empathogens)
Increase a persons feeling of empathy and benevolence towards others
Hallucinogens (Dissociative)
Feel separated or detached from their body/ physical environment
Hallucinogens (Psychedelics)
Produce changes in perception, mood and cognitive processes
