Drug treatments Flashcards
What are the 2 types of antipsychotics that have come from the dopamine hypothesis?
‘Typical’ antipsychotics and ‘Atypical’ antipsychotics
What do both of the types of antipsychotics do?
They are dopamine antagonists, which means they block dopamine receptors. They reduce dopamine activity at the synapse
What does less opportunity for dopamine landing mean?
Lower dopamine activity
What generation are typical antipsychotics?
1st generation
What generation are atypical antipsychotics?
2nd generation
What do typical antipsychotics do?
Reduce positive symptoms. They have a calming/sedative effect
What are the types of typical antipsychotics?
Chloropromazine and Haloperidol
What are the side effects of typical antipsychotics?
- Tardive dyskinesia - stuck in involuntary repetitive movements
- Weight gain
- Muscle tightening → Lack of spontaneous movement
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Sleepiness
What do atypical antipsychotics do?
Reduce positive and negative symptoms. Also act as neurotransmitters - serotonin and GABA
What are the types of atypical antipsychotics?
Risperidone and clozapine
Which type of antipsychotics have less overall side effects?
Atypical antipsychotics
What are the side effects of atypical antipsychotics?
No tardive dyskinesia BUT agranulocytosis - white blood cells are destroyed → Damages immune system
