Drug Treatment For OCD Flashcards
What are SSRIs
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
Serotonin is released by the presynaptic neurone and travels across a synapse. The neurotransmitter chemically conveys the signals to the postsynaptic neutron and then is reabsorbed.
What do SSRIs do?
SSRIs increase levels of serotonin in the synapse by preventing the reabsorption and breakdown and thus continue to stimulate the postsynaptic neuron. This compensates for what is wrong with serotonin system in OCD.
Alternative to SSRIs: Tricyclics
An older type of antidepressant are sometimes used. Which have the same effect on the serotonin system but usually worse side effects.
Alternatives to SSRIs: SNRI (serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor)
Increase levels of serotonin in the synapse but use another neurotransmitter; noradrenaline.
