Drug Therapy Flashcards
What are two examples of drug therapies used to manage stress?
Benzodiazepines and beta blockers
What is the mode of action for benzodiazepines?
•GABA combines with GABA-A receptors on the postsynaptic neuron.
•BZ drug molecules combine with GABA receptors so channels are opened without blocking them (allosteric effect).
•Chloride ions enter the neuron, making it less negatively charged meaning it is less likely to fire.
What part of the nervous system do benzodiazepines act on?
Central nervous system
What part of the nervous system do beta blockers act on?
Sympathetic nervous system
What is the mode of action of beta blockers?
•Block beta-adrenergic receptors which stops receptors being stimulated by adrenaline and noradrenaline.
•This slows heart rate, reduces blood pressure and reduces the strength of heart contractions, which reduces its need for oxygen.
