drug therapy Flashcards
what are the two types of drug therapies
typical antipsychotics and atypical antipsychotics
what is an example of a typical antipsychotic
chlorpromazine
how do typical antipsychotics work?
they combat the positive symptoms of schizophrenia and act as an antagonist to reduce the effects of dopamine by binding with and blocking D2 receptors in the synapses in the mesolimbic pathway
what are the side effects of typical antipsychotics?
includes drowsiness, blurred vision, weight gain and muscles spasms
what is an example of an atypical antipsychotic?
risperidone
how do atypical antipsychotics work?
they combat negative symptoms because it blocks serotonin receptors as well as dopamine receptors by blocking D2 receptors
however they only occupy them temporarily before rapidly dissociating to allow normal dopamine transmission
what are the side effects of atypical antipsychotics?
include dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness and sometimes seizures
