Drug Testing Flashcards
Who discovered the foxglove remedy and when ?
William Withering in 1970
What was foxglove used to treat and what was it ?
Dropsy
Swelling brought to the body by heart failure
How are modern drugs tested before the phases?
Potential drugs tested on human tissues in a lab and then tested on live animals
Describe Phase 1 of drug testing and what does is measure
Test the new drug on healthy individuals, done to find out :
Any side effects
a safe dosage
how the body reacts to it
Describe phase 2 and what it measures
drug is tested on a larger group of people( patients)
to see how well the drug works
Describe phase 3
the drug is compared to existing treatments and testing it on and thousands of patients
Describe phase 3
the drug is compared to existing treatments and testing it on and thousands of patients
Why is a large sample size used in phase 3 ?
to make the results more accurate and representative of the population
What two groups are patients split into in phase 3 and why?
- one group receives the new treatment
- other group receives existing treatments
this helps scientists to see if there’s improvements and comparisons
what are placebos and why are they used ?
A replica of the drug being tested that is indistinguishable from the real drug yet it
shows no effects on the patient whatsoever.
Why is a placebo used?
help scientists see of the drug actually works and if it improves the patient more than the placebo does
What is a double blind trial ?
Where neither the doctors nor the patients know whose been given the placebo or the real drug
Why is a double blind trail done?
reduce bias within the results
