Drug-Related Problems and Allergies Flashcards
Any undesirable event experienced by a patient
that involves drug therapy and that interferes with
achieving the desired goals of therapy.
Drug-Related Problems (DRPs)
Features of Optimum Drug Therapy? *IMP
- Appropriate Indication
- Effectiveness
- Safety
- Adherence/Compliance
Any unintentional error in the prescribing, dispensing or administration of a medicinal
product while in the control of the healthcare professional or the patient?
Medication error
Strategies for prevention of medication errors?
- Proper education and training
- Multiple check system
- Tall-man lettering (for LASA medications)
- Computerization and automation (Barcodes)
- Standardization & optimization of medication use systems
- Ensure Five Medication Rights
DEF:The process of comparing a patient’s medication orders to all of the medications
that the patient is taking. It should be done at every transition of care to avoid
medication errors such as duplications, dosing errors, or drug interactions.
Medication reconciliation
Steps in Reconciliation Process:
- Develop complete and accurate medication list
- Compare (reconcile) the listed medications with any new orders
- Update the medication list as orders change
- Communicate the updated list to the next provider of care
DEF:A step-wise process in which the allergy-inducing drug is administered
to the patient in small incremental doses to induce a state of temporary
tolerance to the drug by altering the immune response to it.
Desensitization
occurs with
repeated insulin injections at the same site.?
Lipodystrophy
Drugs that cause Drug-induced Photosensitivity?
tetracyclines, diuretics, (thiazide & loop), retinoids, sulfa antibiotics,
quinolones
A small molecule that elicits an immune response (stimulates the
production of antibodies) only when conjugated to a larger carrier
molecule like a protein.
