what characterizes Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and TENS
invasion into the dermis with some necrosis of tissue
When does a Type I hypersensitivity reaction occur?
Immediately - less than one hour of last administered dose
urticaria, anaphylaxis, edema
how do you treat a suspected drug allergy
stop offending agent: don’t know which one, stop them ALL
antihistamines
+/- systemic steroids
what is dermatographism?
scratching the surface of the skin, raised mark (a form of wheal) - sign of skin allergies
what is the difference between SJS and TENS?
The body surface area involved
What is the mortality for SJS? For TENS?
5-12% for SJS
>20% for TENS
how long from drug exposure to the development of SJS?
within 8 weeks
What is Niklosky’s sign?
skin has sloughs down all the way to dermis (superficial epithelium gone)
What is a significant sequlae of SJS/TENS?
blindness from scarring of the cornea
what should you NEVER use with a SJS/TENS patient?
chlorohexidine-impregnated patch
