Gentamicin: poorly able to cross the gut membrane - retained in the gut.

Codeine: metabolised to active form (release) morphine

What are the features of morphine
A
- rapidly metabolised in the liver - low oral bioavailability so needs bigger dosing
- however a conjugated form Morphine-6-glucuronide is more active
