Q

How does female sex affect drug removal?

A

Females generally eliminate drugs from their bodies more rapidly than males

The female sex are more subject than males to some serious drug adverse-effects such as torsades des points and some severe idiosyncratic (no known cause) drug reactions.

Q

What is pharmacodynamic?

A

Pharmacokinetic interactions occur when one drug, dietary or herbal chemical, impacts on the biotransformation of a drug, or even their distribution within the body.

The term ‘biotransformation’ covers the conversion of drugs into metabolites, which makes them more soluble in water. This facilitates excretion of the metabolites. The term ‘metabolism’ is also used, but this is a much broader term that can apply to many non-drug related enzymatic activities in the body.

Q

What is the drug-food interaction with ACE inhibitors?

A

Patients who have swapped their dietary salt for potassium-containing salt (e.g. Lo-Salt®) substitutes may be at risk of hyperkalaemia if taking ACE inhibitors or potassium-retaining diuretics such as spironolactone or amiloride.
