Drug Discovery (Week 13) Flashcards
1
Q
pharmacogenetics/pharmacogenomics
A
- idea that drug responses in a population will vary due to differences in genetic makeup (SNPs)
- predict individual responses
- p.genetics=single gene
- p.genomics=multiple genes/expn patterns
2
Q
Clinical Trial Processes Phases
A
I: Pharmacokinetics, dosing, safety. small, short study, healthy + patients. Open label, no control.
II: efficacy, safety and pharmacokinetics. controlled, usu blinded. medium size, patients.
III: efficacy, safety (rare issues). large group, patients:
Success = NOC = approved for sale
IV: post marketing surveillance, may be required. Monitor for safely issues + efficacy.
3
Q
old vs new drug discovery methods
A
old: natural products or mimick endogenous thing
new: high-throughput screening, combinatorial chemistry, reliance on pharmacogenetics
