Analgesics
Reduce pain. Nonopioid are used for mild pain l. Opioid are used to treat moderate to severe pain.
Anesthetics
Remove sensation to a desired area to allow for medical procedures. General- renders patient unconscious. Local- allows patient to remain conscious but removes sensation.
Anorexiants
Used in management of obesity. Should be combined with reduced calorie diet and exercise
Antacids
Neutralize stomach acids to treat symptoms of acid reflux, heartburn, and indigestion
Anti-Alzheimer’s agents
To help manage the dementia that occurs with Alzheimer’s. They attempt to prevent further deterioration of reasoning and memory. Not curative
Antianemics
Prevent and treat anemias, commonly caused by low iron levels in the blood
Antianginals
Treat and prevent angina or chest pain
Anti anxiety medications
To treat anxiety such as GAD or PTSD
Antiarrythmics
Suppress cardiac arrhythmia’s or irregular heartbeats
Antiasthmatics
Manage both acute and chronic attacks of bronchospasm or asthma
Antibiotics
Treat bacterial infections, can help current infections or prevent infection
Anticholinergetics
Slowing a fast heart rate and relieving spasms of the respiratory system and nasal discharge. Treating nausea and vomiting, motion sickness, and dizziness. Decreasing gastric secretions and increase esophageal sphincter muscle tone. To treat eye and urinary tract disorders as well as neuro disorders
Anticoagulants
Prevent blood from clotting, can cause prolonged bleeding time
Anticonvulsant
Increase the incidence and severity of seizures. Blood levels may be measured to evaluate the effectiveness of the therapy
Antidepressants
Treat depression and elevate mood l, usually in conjunction with physiotherapy. Can also be used to treat anxiety, bed wetting and chronic pain syndromes. Smoking cessation, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive, and generalized anxiety
