Drosophila Flashcards
What is developmental biology?
the study of how an egg turns into a full grown organism
What are stem cells?
cells that are not specialized
Where do stem cells come from?
embryos and fetuses
What are the 3 different stages of the life cycle of a fly?
embryonic stage
larval stage
adult stage
What is cleavage?
It is a series of mitotic divisions after fertilization, where a zygote becomes a blastula.
What are blastomeres? What is it called when they form a cell layer?
Blastomeres are smaller cells of a zygote. If arranged to form a cell layer, it is called a blastoderm
Describe cleavage in early fly development
- the cell undergoes incomplete division, that is to say the nucleus will divide many times
- the incomplete cleavage will create a syncytium, a single cell with many nuclei
- nuclei will move to the periphery of the embryo to form a syncytial blastoderm, a superficial layer of nuclei surrounding the yolky cytoplasm
- cell membrane develops and encloses the nuclei, individual cells form, cellular blastoderm form
What is another word for incomplete cleavage?
meroblastic
What is another word for complete cleavage?
holoblastic
What are the different yolk distributions?
isolecithal
mesolecithal
telolecithal
centrolecithal
What are the different anatomical axis?
Anterior-Posterior Axis (head-tail)
Dorsal-Ventral Axis
Left-Right Axis
What happens after cleavage?
gastrulation
Describe gastrulation in early fly development
- cells in the blastula form three germ layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm
- mesoderm invaginates and forms a ventral furrow
- blastula becomes a gastrula
