how much steering wheel play can make it hard steer
more then 10 degrees or about 2 inches at the rim of a 20inch steering wheel
Name suspension defects
1.Cracked or broken spring hangers
2. Missing or broken leaves in any leaf spring if ¼ or more is missing vehicle will be placed “out of service”

what are the 4 types of retarder
- exhaust
- engine
- hydraulic
4.electric
TRUE or FALSE retarders keep you from skidding when the road is slippery
False wheels may slip when roads are wet
what should you do to the retarders if the roads are slippery and your drive wheels have poor traction
Turn the retarders off because the retarder may cause them to skid
why should you back towards the drivers side
so you can see better because it is harder to see from the right side
what are 2 special conditions where you should downshift
1.Before starting down a hill
2. before entering a curve
what is the perception time for an alert driver

0.02
what BAC is it illegal’s to operate a vehicle
0.04
how long will you lose you CDL for a first offense in driving under the influence of any substance
1 year
how long will you loose you CDL that is placarded for hazardous material for anything under the influence
at least 3 years
how long will you loose your CDL for a second offense under a placarded vehicle
for life
how long will you loose your CDL for committing a felony involving substances
for life

how long will you lose your cdl for a third violation within a three year period for a railroad violation
at least 1 year
what are the two air lines in a trailer
service line and emergency line
how far ahead should you be looking while driving
12-15 seconds ahead
what are the 5 different types of lights
- reflectors
- marker lights
- clearance lights
- tail lights
5.identification lights
how should you properly break
- place vehicle in in proper low gear
- apply brakes hard enough to feel a definite slow down
- when your speed has been reduced to 5mph you are considered in safe speed and release the breaks then repeat the steps
truck tractors built on or after what date are required to have ABS systems
March 1, 1997
why should you make a move as soon as you know that your breaks are failing
the longer you wait the faster the vehicle will go and the harder it becomes to stop
what are the 3 accident procedures
1.protect the area
2.notify the authorities
3.care for the injured
how many identifying placards should there be on a vehicle
at least 4
where should the placards be placed
in the front, rear, and both sides
how big must placards be
9.8 inches (250mm)
how should the placards be presented
turned upright to a point in the shape of a diamond
what is included in the Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR)
1.net weight of vehicle with accessories
2. weight of passengers
3. weight of fuel
4. weight of cargo
what will too much weight on the steering axle cause
hard steering and damage too the steering axel and tires
what will happen if you have under loaded front axels
can make the steering axle to light and cause poor traction
what will happen if your load has a high center gravity
can cause greater chances in a rollover
what is the purpose of the front end structure
should block any forward movement of cargo
where is the safety relief valve located
in the first tank the air compressor pumps air into
what is the job of the safety valve
protects the tanks and the rest of the system from too much pressure
how much pressure does the safety valve need to open
150psi
how does the s-cam brake work
it forces the brake shoes away from one another and presses them against the inside of the brake drum
what happens when you release the brake pedal in an s-cam
the s-cam rotates back and the spring pulls the brake shoes away from the drum allowing the wheels to roll
how do disc brakes work
the pressure of the brake chamber on the slack adjuster turns the power screw and the power screw clamps the disc or the rotor between the lining pads of a caliper
unlike s-cam brakes what is used in a disc brake that is NOT in a s-cam brake
power screw
what does your application pressure gauge show you
how much air pressure is being applied to the brakes
what does it mean if you are increasing the application pressure to hold the same speed
brakes are fading
what does the need for increased pressure while braking indicate
- brakes out of adjustment
- air leaks
- mechanical problems
how does a stop light switch work
the air break system activates an electric switch using air pressure to switch the brake lights on
what happens when the air pressure is removed from spring breaks
springs will put on the brakes
what allows a driver to let air out of the spring brakes
parking brake lever
what will also allow spring brakes to deploy
a leak in the air break system
what does ABS help with
- avoiding wheel lock up
- reduces braking pressure
- maintain control
ABS may not help you stop faster but you should be able too…..
- steer around obstacles while braking
- avoid skids caused by over braking
how do you stab brake
apply brakes all the way until wheels lock up then release once wheels are rolling again apply brakes fully again
how long can it take for your wheels to start rolling after the breaks have been fully applied
about 1 second
what happens if the brakes are applied before the wheels start rolling
vehicle will not straighten out
what does the parking lever control look like on newer vehicles
yellow and diamond shaped labeled parking brake
what might the parking brake look like in older vehicles
a round blue knob or some other shape or could include a lever the swings from side to side or up and down
what happens when the wheels of a trailer lock up
your trailer might swing around also known as a trailer jackkife
when is your trailer more likely to swing around and create a trailer jackknife
when the trailer is empty or lightly loaded
at what pressure will the tractor pressure valve pop out
in the range of 20-45 PSI
converter dollies and trailers built before what year are not required to have spring brakes
before 1975
All trailers and converter dollies built on or after what year are required to have ABS
March 1, 1998
dollies manufactured on or after what date are required to have a lamp on the left side
March 1, 1998
as you brake with ABS what should you do
slow down and monitor tractor and trailer and if safe back off brakes to stay in control
how should you check that your parking break is working properly
With air pressure built to governor cutout and the parking brake engaged check that the parking brake will hold the vehicle by gently trying to pull forward with parking brake on
how should you check that your hydraulic brakes check
Pump the brake pedal three times then hold it down for 5 seconds.
what should the brake pedal not do after pumping the brakes and during holding it down for the 5 seconds to check your hydraulic breaks
the break pedal should not move (depress) during the 5 seconds
how do you preform a service brake check
pull forward at 5mph and apply the service break and stop
make sure that the vehicle does not pull side to side and comes to a top when the brake is applied
how should you inspect the locking jaws
look into the 5th wheel gap and check that the locking jaws are fully closed around the king pin
how should you inspect your 5th wheel skid plate
Check for proper lubrication and securely mounted to the platform and that all the bolt and pins are secure and none are missing
what do you need in a school bus for emergency equipment
- spare electrical fuses
2.three reflective red triangles - 6 fuses OR 3 liquid burning flares
- fire extinguisher
- emergency kit
- body fluid cleanup kit
how should you inspect landing gear in a school bus
Check that gear is fully raised and has no missing parts, the handle is secure, and the support frames and landing pads are not damaged
if the landing gear in the school bus is air operated what should you check for
hydraulic leaks
