21
Q

What are two main things to look for ahead?

A
  1. Look for vehicles coming onto the highway, into your lane, or turning. 2. Watch for brake lights from slowing vehicles.
22
Q

Whats your most important way to see the sides and rear of your vehicle?

A

Mirrors

23

A

Signaling

24
Q

Where should you place reflectors when stopped on a divided highway?

A

10’ back, 100’ back & 200’ back

25
Q

What three things add up to total stopping distance?

A

Perception distance, reaction distance & braking distance.

26
Q

If you go twice as fast, will your stopping distance increase by two or four times?

A

Four

27
Q

Empty trucks have the best braking. True or false

A

False

28
Q

What is hydroplaning?

A

When water or slush collects on the road, the tires lose their contact with the road and have little to no traction. Its like water skiing.

29
Q

What is black ice?

A

A thin layer of ice that is clear enough to see the road underneath it.

30
Q

How do you find out how many seconds of following distance space you have?

A

You need at least one second for each 10 feet of vehicle length below 40mph. Over 40mph add 1 second for safety.

31
Q

If you are driving a 30 foot vehicle at 55 mph, hope many seconds of following distance should you allow?

A

4 seconds

32
Q

You should decrease your following distance if somebody is following you to closely. True or false?

A

False

33
Q

If you swing wide to the left before turning right, another driver may try to pass you on the right. True or false?

A

True

34
Q

What is a hazard?

A

Any road condition or other road user that is a possible danger.

35
Q

Why make emergency plans when you see a hazard?

A

You will have more time to act if you see hazards before they become emergencies. Being prepared reduces the danger.

36
Q

What are some tips to follow so you won’t become a distracted driver?

A

1. Turn off all communication devices

  1. Do not type or read a text message on her mobile device while driving
  2. Familiarize yourself with your vehicles features and equipment before you get behind the wheel
  3. Adjust all vehicle controls and mirrors to your preferences prior to driving.
  4. Preprogram radio stations
  5. Review maps, program the GPS and plan your route before you begin driving
  6. Don’t attempt to read or white right while you drive.
  7. Avoid smoking, eating and drinking while you drive. Leave early to allow yourself time to stop to eat.
  8. Don’t engage in complex or emotionally intense conversations with other occupants.
  9. Secure a commitment from other occupants to behave responsibly and to support the driver and reducing distractions.
37
Q

How do you use in vehicle communications equipment cautiously?

A

When possible, pull off the road in a safe, legal place when making/ receiving a call on communication equipment.

38
Q

How do you recognize a distracted driver?

A
  1. Vehicles that may drift over the Lane divider lines or within their own lane
  2. Vehicles traveling at inconsistent speeds.
  3. Drivers who are preoccupied with Maps, food, cigarettes, cell phones, or other objects.
  4. Drivers who appear to be involved in conversations with their passengers.
39
Q

What is the difference between aggressive driving and road rage?

A

Aggressive driving is the active operating a motor vehicle in a selfish, board, or pushy manner, without regard for the rights or safety of others (i.e., changing lanes frequently and abruptly without notice)

Road rage is operating a motor vehicle with the intent of doing harm to others or physically assaulting a driver or their vehicle

40
Q

What should you do when confronted with an aggressive driver?

A
  1. Make every attempt to get out of their way
  2. Do not challenge them by speeding up or attempting to hold your own and your travel lane
  3. Avoid eye contact
  4. Ignore gestures and refuse to react to them
  5. Report aggressive drivers to the appropriate authorities by providing a vehicle description, license number, location and, if possible, direction of travel
  6. If you have a cell phone, and can do it safely, call the police.
  7. If an aggressive driver is involved in a crash further down the road, stop a safe distance from the crash scene, wait for the police to arrive, and report the driving behavior that you witnessed.
41
Q

What are some things you can do to reduce your stress before and while you drive?

A
  1. Listen to “easy listening” music
  2. Give the drive your full attention
  3. Be realistic about your travel time. Expect delays.
  4. If you’re going to be later than you expected, deal with it. take a deep breath and accept the delay
  5. Give other drivers the benefit of the doubt. Try to imagine why here she is driving that way. Whatever the reason, it has nothing to do with you
  6. Slow down and keep your following distance reasonable.
  7. Don’t drive slowly in the left-hand lane of traffic.
  8. Avoid gestures. Keep your hands on the wheel.
  9. Avoid making any gestures that might anger another driver, even seemingly harmless expressions of irritation like shaking your head.
  10. Be a cautious and courteous driver. If another driver seems eager to get in front of you, say, “be my guest.” This response will soon become a habit and you won’t be as offended by other drivers actions
42
Q

You should use low beams whenever you can. True or false?

A

False

43
Q

What should you do before you drive if you are drowsy?

A
  1. Get adequate sleep, adults need 8 to 9 hours to maintain alertness
  2. Prepare route carefully to identify total distance, stopping points and other logistic considerations
  3. Schedule chips for the hours you were normally awake, not the middle of the night
  4. Drive with a passenger
  5. Avoid medication that cause drowsiness
  6. Consult your physician if you suffer from daytime sleepiness, have difficulty sleeping at night or take frequent naps
  7. Incorporate exercise into your daily life to give you more energy
44
Q

What effects can wet brakes cause? How can you avoid these problems?

A

Wet brakes can cause the brakes to be weak, to apply unevenly, or to grab. This can cause lack of braking power, wheel lock ups, pulling to one side or the other, and jackknife if you pull a trailer.

Avoid driving through deep puddles or flowing water if possible. If not you should:

  1. Slow down and plays transmission in a low gear.
  2. Gently put on the brakes. This process linings against the brake drums or discs and keeps mud, slit, sand, and water from getting in.
  3. Increase engine rpm and cross the water while keeping light pressure on the brakes.
  4. When out of the water, maintain light pressure on the brakes for short distance to heat them up and dry them out.
  5. Make a test stop when safe to do so. Check behind you to make sure no one is following, then apply the brakes to be sure they work well. If not, dry them out further as described above.
45
Q

You should let air out of hot tires so the pressure goes back to normal. True or false?

A

False

46
Q

You can safely remove the radiator cap as long as the engine isnt overheated. True or false?

A

False

47
Q

What factors determine your selection of a safe speed when going down a long steep downgrade?

A
  1. Total weight of the vehicle and cargo.
  2. Length of the grade.
  3. Steepness of the grade.
  4. Road conditions.
  5. Weather.
48
Q

Why should you be in the proper gear before starting down a hill?

A

He won’t be able to shift into a lower gear when you’re on the hill, you may not even be able to get back into any gear and all engine braking affect will be lost. Forcing an automatic transmission into a lower gear at a high speed could damage the transmission and also lead to loss of all engine braking affect.

49
Q

Describe the proper breaking technique when going down a long, steep downgrade.

A
  1. Apply the brakes just hard enough to feel a definite slow down
  2. When your speed has been reduced to approximately 5 mph below your safe speed, release the brakes for 3 seconds
  3. When your speed has increased to your safe speed, repeat steps one and two
50
Q

What type of vehicles can get stuck on a railroad Highway crossing?

A
  1. Low-slung units (lowboy, car carrier, moving van, possum belly livestock trailer)
  2. Single axle tractor pulling along trailer with its landing gear such accommodate a tandem axle tractor
51
Q

How long does it take for a typical tractor trailer unit to clear a double track?

A

More than 15 seconds
