Driving (Onroad) Flashcards
TUG?
- Take information
- Use information
- Give information
What speed over the limit can you drive?
- 20 km over limit but must ask permission from OIC
- Act says 45 is the limit
When can you NOT exceed the speed limit?
Private property
Directed by police
When not safe to do so
What is a controlled intersection?
What should you do at a controlled intersection?
Stop signs/give way/Lights (regulatory controlled signs)
Approach at a speed which will enable you to bring the vehicle to a complete stop and you must not continue unless it is say to do so
Can you go through railway crossings?
Follow signage and do not disobey
What is the procedure for after a collision?
- Stop and render assistance
- Driver must supply name and stations address
- Report incident to supervisor
4.Complete eclaims motor vehicle form as soon as possible - Mark position and scene if possible
- Liability
What is the process of defensive driving?
Information
Position
Speed
Gear
Three rules of good braking?
- Brake when going in a straight line
- Vary brake pressure according to road surface
- On downhill brake firmly on the straight and lightly on curves/bends
What is the pre drive drill? I.e SSSSM
Secure the cab
Seat adjusted
Steering adjusted
Seat belt
Adjust mirrors
What’s the process for reversing?
Use a guide whenever possible.
When no guide available, get out and look around the vehicle.
What is an emergency vehicle?
A fire vehicle on official duty as a consequence of a fire or fire alarm or rescue operation where human life is considered to be in danger.
It is not the type of vehicle but the function at the time which defines it as an emergency vehicle.
Emergency vehicle excemptions?
Regulation 281
5 rules of seeing?
- Aim high
- Get the big picture
- Keep eyes moving
- Leave yourself an out (cushion)
- Make sure other road users see you
What are driving plans?
- Location of schools zones
- Road works
3.Areas of congestion/ time of day
4.Access to main roads - Railways/crossings
Enviro considerations when parking or siting?
- Park on roads/tracks
- Avoid driving over plants/trees
3.Avoid dieback areas
4.Decontaminate vehicle after being in contaminated areas
Environmental factors and their considerations + measures - Weather?
- Heavy rain - reduced visibility and increased stopping - Reduce speed, headlights on low beam, increase following distance
- Glare - reduced viability - use visor reduce speed, sunglasses.
- Fog - reduced visibility - reduce speed, headlights on low beam, fog lights if fitted.
Driver fatigue ( Contributing factors management strategies and effects on driving)
- Intense mental activity - Identify signs of fatigue in yourself and others - slower reaction times.
- Intense physical activity - take regular breaks - lack of concentration.
- Sleep loss/disruption - obtain sufficient recovery - errors in judgement and calculations
- Hot or cold environments - rotate through task regularly - impaired judgement
- excessive long shift - regular breaks - tiredness/falling asleep
What are some driving hazards? What are each of their considerations and measures?
- Gravel or slippery surface - increased stopping reduced traction - reduce speed and increase following distance.
- Dust or Smoke - reduced visibility - reduce speed parking lights on increase following speed and be able to stop in field of vision.
- Roadworks - workers on road, road hazards, slippery or loose surface - comply with directions and travel at directed speed.
- Peak or heavy traffic - high congestion areas and school zones - consider alternative route and travel at a speed that suits conditions.
What are the functions of a hazard warning system?
One dot - turn off warning system
Two dots - activate beacon lights
Three dots - activate sirens
Name some ancillary equipment on the vehicles?
Shovel
Axe
Hose
Valve key and bar
Standpipe
Drip torch
Classes of license required to drive DFES vehicles?
Light tanker
Medium Pumper/Urban
Combined ladder platform
C Class
MR Class
HR Class
What 3 things are required when setting up road hazard management?
- Portable traffic warning signs (twice the speed limit from the incident)
- Traffic cones (from center of the road to the end of the side of the road) 6 cones 6 m apart from the pump in the fend off position.
3.
What is a safe speed to travel when there is limited visibility?
At a speed that will allow you to come to a complete stop within your field of vision
What is regulation 281 and the 3 conditions that need to be met for the regulations not to apply?
Regulation 281 of the traffic code 2000 gives drivers of emergency vehicles exemption from the code.
- The drive must take reasonable care.
- It is reasonable the provisions should not apply
- The vehicle is a motor vehicle that is moving and displaying red and blue flashing lights or sounding an alarm.
What should be done with the retarder when driving on slippery road surfaces?
Turned off and foot brake should be used instead (due to risk of wheel locking)
Braking with and without ABS?
With: driver should apply firm and continuous pressure to the pedal to prevent wheels from locking up.
Without: braking threshold technique should be used. Brake to point of skidding then released until wheels begin to rotate again.
