• Self-discipline, desire, training & experience.
What is a Passive driver?
What is a Passive driver?
• Timid or unsure, driving at low speed, other drivers needs before themselves.
What is an Aggressive Driver?
What is an Aggressive Driver?
• Deliberately putting other road users at risk and putting own needs in front of everyone else’s. Includes behaviours like speeding, tailgating and cutting off other drivers.
What is an Assertive Driver?
What is an Assertive Driver?
• Confidence in abilities, skills and decision making. Drive defensively but with purpose
From what legislated document does FRV get exemptions for drivers of emergency vehicles?
• Road Safety Road Rules 2017
Exceptions for drivers of emergency vehicles, fall under rule …….. ?
• 306
These exemptions only apply, if you as the driver, are doing what 2 things?
- Showing reasonable care and
- If the vehicle is MOVING it is displaying flashing lights and/or sounding an alarm
(It must also be considered reasonable that the provision apply)
- Rule 307 of Road Safety Road Rules provides exemption pertaining to?
• Stopping and Parking emergency vehicles
Who is responsible for wearing seatbelts?
The driver (Rule 264) AND any person over 16 years (Rule 265
- subrule 4). Both will be fined.
Do you wear seatbelts reversing?
Seatbelts not required. Rule 264 - 2a
Are there any exemptions to wearing a seatbelt?
Medical only
Who is responsible for the stowage of loose items within the cabin of
FRV vehicles?
Driver is responsible for ensuring any loose items or equipment are secured
What drivers must have a BAC of 0.00?
• any bus capable of carrying more than 12 adults including the driver
• any rigid or articulated truck over 4.5 tonnes VM (that’s us)
• a heavy vehicle with Driver Under Instruction plates because you are learning
• holders of a probationary licence.
• Any employee of FRV that is on duty
Can fire service vehicles go through posted mass and dimensions limit signs?
No, unless you have a written exemption provided by controlling authority ie.
Vicroads or local council.
What’s the rule on pedestrians and vehicles at intersections?
Pedestrians have right of way at ALL intersections other than roundabouts where pedestrians must give way to vehicles. (Common sense suggests you misy still need to give way)
Under the 306 exemptions when can we cross Railway lines
- once the train passes? once boomgate is raised?
- once lights stop flashing?
• Only once all of the above occurs
Where can you find information on FRV’s Policies and Procedures in relation to driving?
• FRV Intranet- - Operational Training - Service, Delivery & Training - Driving Training
What are FRV requirements with Log Books?
• Complete after every trip. Have OIC sign off?
If a fire service appliance breaks down or incorrect fuel is added, who do we notify and what should we do.
Do NOT Start or attempt to move vehicle.
• Notifv Firecom and place out of commission
• Inform Ops Commander, Workshops/District Mechanics of your actions
Below what height must bridges have a clearly posted clearance height?
4.6m
Under what circumstances do Rule 306 exemptions for going 20kmh over posted speed limits not apply to Emergency vehicles?
Driving past other emergency vehicles with flashing lights
• Driving in school zones
• Driving through roadworks (exemption applies for Div B if no workers on scene)
• Max of 110kmh speed in a 100kmh or higher zone
List 7 vehicle support systems
Electrical, cooling, lubrication, ignition, fuel, braking and drive line.
List 5 main components of the electrical system.
Alternator, Battery, electrical circuits, fuses/circuits breakers & warning lights and gauges
List 5 main components of the vehicles lubrication system?
• Oil pump
• Oil filter
• Sump
• Turbo lubricator
• Oil pressure gauge and warning light
List the 8 components of a vehicles Cooling system?
• Fan, Radiator, Expansion tank (overflow reservoir), water pump, thermostat, temp warning light/gauge/alarm, warning lights and gauges, heater
What are the types of breaking systems?
• Air, Hydraulic and Air over Hydraulic
If an appliances air breaks are depleted what will you nead te do to build the air up to sufficient levels?
• Ensure vehicle is in neutral and apply Park Brake
• Increase engine revs to max of 1200 RPM
• Wait for audible tone to stop
• Reset interlock valve
Name two fuel systems?
Petrol & Diesel
Why do we do daily vehicle inspections?
Roadworthy and mechanically safe
Which way do we walk around the vehicle to do pre-drive checks?
• Clockwise 360 starting from the front
Name some reasons as to why the vehicle may not start?
•Battery Guard has activated, Batt is isolated, Vehicle in gear or 240 plug still in
3 elements in reference to the vehicles centre of gravity?
• Pitch - force you feel as vehicle dives as brakes applied and lifts under acceleration
• Roll - force that makes occupants roll as vehicle corners
• Yaw - it applies no force as the wheels spin at different speeds as the vehicle turns
Explain the role of momentum, directional control and centrifugal force when taking a bend?
• Momentum is the straight line in which your vehicle wants to continue.
• Directional Control is the direction in which you are steering the vehicle
• Centrifugal Force is the force trying to pull your vehicle to the outer edge of the road
How is stopping distance calculated?
Reaction Distance + Braking Distance
What are the four phases of vehicle control?
Position, speed, gear & Acceleration
What is the first requirement of correcting a skid?
• Know the type of skid
What generally causes skidding?
•Excessive speed, course steering and/or excessive acceleration or braking
What is a rear wheel skid called? How do we correct it?
Oversteer (vehicle turns more than the driver expects - rear end kicks out)
• To correct - take foot off throttle and counter steer
What is a front wheel skid called? How do we correct it?
• Understeer (when the vehicle doesn’t turn and continues in straight line)
• To correct - reduce steering and ease off throttle
What are the 4 four considerations for taking a bend or corner?
Correct positioning, right speed, correct gear & positive acceleration
What are the five steps to planning process?
Observe, Anticipate, Prioritise, Decide what to do & Act
Benefits of commentary driving?
• Increased concentration, observation and ability to drive systematically
Benefits of the Pull push steering.
When performed correctly, your hands should always return to the 10 to 2 or 9 to 3 positions on the steering wheel without crossing your arms or taking your hands off the wheel;
•Complete control (always ready to turn further or re-turn back);
• Two hands will always be on the steering wheel;
Less effort; and
Smoother steering
When do we need a guide when reversing?
Any time you reverse
What are the following distances on dry and wet surfaces?
• 4 & 8 Seconds
Going past a stationary Tram under Code 1, what speed should you be doing?
A reasonable speed below the posted speed limit for the designated area
How can Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) be an advantage?
• Allows driver to conduct emergency brake and swerve manoeuvre whilst vehicle applies optimal braking
Seven (7) vehicle support systems?
electrical
cooling
lubrication
• fuel
• braking
drive-line
What Is a Hazard?
hazard can be defined as: anything which is an actual or potential danger.
