Drives Flashcards
K-9 olfactory is how many times stronger than a human?
40-100x
Olfaction is the dogs
Most highly developed sense
Are dogs macro somatic or micro somatic?
Macro somatic
Vomeronasal Gland
In the upper pallet behind the top K-9 teeth. Has Olfactory cells and 608 nerve bundles connecting it to the olfactory lobe in brain.
Theory of Oder dispersion
Time Temp Humidity Quality Quantity Masking agents
What types of containers will you need?
Training aid container
Super scent container
Negative aid container
What should be in a training aid container?
Ammo can Glass jars with metal lid Tongs Health food saver gloves Color code Two oz of each Oder/color Cotton balls in each jar Bags/glass salt shakers
What is a training aid container?
Items used daily for training upkeep
What is a super scent container used for?
Used to scent gifte
What is a super scent container?
Large gallon size jars
Use 1/4 oz. marijuana and place as many gifte that will fit inside
Cocain
Other drugs
What is a negative aid container?
One of every item used in training which has never been contaminated with narcotic odor.
Place each item in separate zip lock bags.
Purpose is to proof dog to not hit on anything but narcotic odor.
Place in room/car free of narcotics
What is the main way dogs communicate?
Through body posture.
How do you test dogs hunt?
Give visual stimulation with toy and retrieve
Make dog think toy has been placed or thrown in an area
Leave area watch dog hunt 3-5 minutes
Three alerts/ how to tell odor response
Change of breathing-subtile/dramatic
Change of body posture-subtile/dramatic
Final indication-scratch/sit/bark/bite
What is a sweep?
Done when a dog shows interest
Make dog check 2-3 feet each side of where interest shown high and low while handler keeps feet moving.
What is proofing
Done when the dog has gone into final response but handler did not see odor response. Coax dog several items down then come back searching the item dog indicated on.
Two types of rewards
Primary
Toy/gifte comes from object dog indicates on
Secondary
Comes from handler dog should not see toy coming
Two main characteristics of scent cone?
Further away from the object the odor is less dense
The closer to the object the odor is more dense
Reverse search pattern
First sweep is for dog eye level and below
Second sweep is for handler what dog missed
Explain constructive search time
1st search 20 min. Rest 25
2nd search 12-14 min. Rest 30
3rd search 8-10 min done
What is a canine drive?
Inherent genetic instinct placed in the dog for survival. Survival of the individual, pack, or species. It is instinctive and requires no thought process or reasoning.
Drive is there or is not.
What is survival?
The mother of all drives
What is prey drive?
The inherent genetic desire for chase and capture.
Survival drive for food gathering
Contains aggression
All hunt is in prey
What is the most basic stimulator of prey drive?
What is the strongest stimulator of prey drive?
Hunger
Prey escape/hide
Prey drive is a very low stress drive. True or false?
True
What is the only way to fulfill prey drive?
To fill the mouth
What is civil/defense drive?
Inherent genetic ability to act aggressive in other than a food gathering situation.
Contains aggression
What is one of the strongest stimulators of civil drive?
Pain
Threat of pain or attack
Civil drive is defensive aggression explain
Self defense
Area defense
Pack defense
Does civil drive contain hunt?
No
Is civil drive a high or low stress drive?
Very high stress drive
What is the only way to fulfill civil drive?
To create distance
What is pack drive?
Inherent genetic desire to fit into a social structure.
All verbal and physical corrections do in pack
What are two of the strongest simulators of pack drive?
Alpha praise
Alpha punishment
What fulfills pack drive?
Alpha praise
Three ways to stimulate prey drive
Visual
Audible
Olfactory
Basic trigger for prey drive
Hunger
What is the golden rule of detector dog training?
To teach the dog only the intended odor which is narcotics.
Goblet Cells
Produce mucous that bathes the interior of the nose. Keeps the membrane and incoming air moist. Traps foreign substances.
Nasal plane
Hairless part of nose covered with plaque pattern individual to each dog. Contains the nostrils which is entryway to nasal chambers.
Turbinates
Boney ridges covered with mucous which slow down air movement by protruding into nasal chambers.
